CIBIL dispute guide: what you can correct and how to raise one online

A CIBIL dispute fixes wrong details on your credit report, like an incorrect overdue amount or a closed loan shown as active, not genuine late payments. Most account-level fixes still need the lender's confirmation. Here's how to check, file, and follow up.

CIBIL dispute at a glance

You can dispute wrong personal, account or enquiry details: a wrong PAN, an incorrect overdue amount, a duplicate account, a closed loan still shown as active, or an enquiry you don't recognise. File it through CIBIL's dispute resolution page. CIBIL can't erase genuine defaults, only the lender that reported the account can verify a correction. Have your PAN, account number and proof ready, and check the other bureaus too once it's fixed.

What can and cannot be corrected

Fair game to dispute: a wrong PAN, name, date of birth, contact details, loan ownership, a duplicate account, a wrong overdue amount, wrong DPD, or an enquiry you don't recognise. Off the table: real missed EMIs, genuine settlements and accurate old defaults, since a dispute fixes a wrong record rather than deleting a real one. A correction fixes a field, an update reflects new status, and deletion removes data that shouldn't be there at all.

Who can correct what before you file

Personal detail errors go through CIBIL's own process, though matching and verification still apply. Account-level data, like overdue amount, DPD or closure status, needs sign-off from the lender that reported it. CIBIL keeps their figure until a correction arrives. If you already have proof, such as a closure letter or receipt, contact the lender directly first and ask when they'll report the fix.

Common CIBIL errors and the proof to attach

Match your proof to the exact field. Account data usually needs the lender's sign-off, not just a general explanation.

ErrorProof to attach
Wrong PAN, DOB or nameID proof
Closed loan shown activeClosure letter or no-dues certificate
Wrong overdue amountPayment receipt or bank statement
Wrong DPDEMI debit proof
Duplicate accountReport extract and sanction letter
Unknown accountPAN plus a written denial, treat as urgent
Unknown enquiryYour application history
Genuine settlementUsually not disputable

For an unrecognised enquiry, check if you used a loan marketplace or partner lender around that time first.

How to raise a CIBIL dispute online

Go to CIBIL's dispute resolution page, or log in and use the dispute flow there. Pick the closest section (personal, account or enquiry details), enter the correct value, add the lender name and account number, and attach your proof: receipts, statements, letters or lender emails. Submit and save your dispute ID.

Be specific. "HDFC Bank personal loan ending 1234 closed on 10 March 2026, closure letter attached" works far better than "please improve my CIBIL score."

How to check and understand your dispute status

Track it with your dispute ID in your CIBIL account. Most cases depend on lender verification and can take up to 30 days, so follow up if yours runs longer.

Will your CIBIL score improve after correction?

Only if the fix touches something scoring actually cares about: overdue amount, DPD, ownership or account status. Don't expect an instant bump. Lender reporting, bureau processing and recalculation happen as separate steps, so it can take time and a minor fix might barely move the needle. And correcting an error isn't credit repair. Genuine late payments or high utilisation still need time and discipline, not more disputes.

Can settled or written-off status be corrected?

A settled status is usually accurate if you paid less than what you owed under a settlement agreement, so you can't get it deleted just because you'd prefer a cleaner report. It can be updated if you later pay the remaining amount and the lender confirms that in writing. Dispute written off, suit filed or wilful default entries only when the field itself is wrong, outdated, or belongs to someone else.

If an account that isn't yours appears on your report

This usually points to a data-matching error, a PAN mismatch or identity misuse, so take it seriously since a wrongly attributed loan can sink an approval. Raise a dispute, contact the lender directly, double check your PAN and personal details on file, and keep every email. Prepare your PAN, ID proof, the report extract, the lender's account details, and a signed statement that it isn't yours, all in one folder.

If the dispute is rejected, delayed or ignored

If the dispute is rejected, delayed or ignored

Rejection often happens because the lender confirmed the data, proof was missing, the wrong category was used, account details didn't match, or the entry was a genuine negative record — read the stated reason before refiling the same weak dispute.

  1. Recheck the latest CIBIL report and identify the exact wrong field.
  2. Collect stronger proof, such as a lender letter rather than just a payment screenshot.
  3. Complain through the lender's grievance channel with account details and documents.
  4. Follow up with CIBIL using the dispute ID and the lender's response.
  5. Consider regulator-level grievance routes where eligible under applicable RBI frameworks.

If the lender says it updated its record but CIBIL still shows old data, get written confirmation and the reporting date from the lender and share it with CIBIL.

Should you apply for a loan while a dispute is pending?

Should you apply for a loan while a dispute is pending?

Waiting is usually safer when the disputed entry is serious and score-impacting — active delinquency, a wrong overdue amount, wrong ownership, a duplicate account, written-off or settled status — especially before a home loan, car loan or large personal loan.

You may still apply if the correction is minor or the lender agrees to manual review, in which case share the dispute ID, no-dues certificate, closure letter or lender confirmation with your application. Applying during a live dispute risks rejection, a higher interest rate, a manual-underwriting delay or another hard enquiry — if the wrong entry is material, delaying one application can be safer than collecting several rejections in the same quarter.

After correction, check other bureaus and avoid common mistakes

After correction, check other bureaus and avoid common mistakes

A CIBIL correction doesn't automatically update Experian India, Equifax India or CRIF High Mark — lenders may report corrected data to different bureaus at different times. Verify account status, overdue amount, DPD, ownership and closure date across the reports that matter for your next application, and recheck after the lender confirms correction and a reasonable reporting cycle has passed.

Common mistakes that slow things down: filing a dispute with no dates, account details or proof; asking for a "score increase" instead of a specific data correction; repeatedly disputing genuine negative data instead of pursuing lender clarification and future on-time payments; and ignoring a PAN or identity mismatch that is quietly causing accounts to be linked incorrectly in the first place.
